Life is a Gift of the Lord

God answers parents' prayers

There is Nothing Impossible to Our God
By Rima Venclauskaite

The Doctor said: “Her condition is serious. You've got to pray.”

My mother has just turned 73. She had been working hard all of her life. She had always taken good care over her health and thus had never had serious problems. One winter morning, when the road was slippery, she had to walk to attend some important meeting in her work. Suddenly, my mother fell and hurt herself badly. It all happened in winter 1999. I received a call from the clinic and found out that my mother's condition was very serious.

The nurse told me that my mom had lost her orientation and had not answered any of the questions. What was worse, she was delirious and had no clue of who she was. I was totally shocked. I knew not what to say. Later, as the peace of God came over me, I started thinking about what I was supposed to do. I went to the clinic. When I got there, I found out that my mom's eye had been hurt badly; her hair had all been covered with blood since blood had been flowing out from her ear. I realized that only God was upholding my mom's life. Even though my mind was terrified, I had peace in my heart.

Later I found out that my mom had fallen at about 9.30 in the morning. After that, she had been wondering around in that area for about 3 hours. She had no orientation because she had badly hurt her head. Some people had seen her but since she had been wearing a red shawl they could not see the blood. She had been walking around in the fields until she got to the village where she used to live earlier. The villagers recognized her and called the ambulance. (The nearest telephone was 1 kilometer away.)

When I came to the clinic, my mom was in the intensive care. I kept praying for her all the time. She had not yet been taken good care of, since the main doctor was away. When he finally arrived, he said that my mom's condition was serious. Me and my nephew Linas put hands on her and prayed again. The doctors made all the tests. I was afraid there was going to be an operation performed. After the tests, the doctor said my mom would need an operation. I thought the head operation was something really terrible and dangerous.

My mom was to be prepared for the operation. It was some terrible time. My mom was feverish and delirious and was constantly throwing up. The nurse had to shave her head and get her to the operation room. Nobody knew how long it would take to perform that operation. The doctor told me to go home and wait there. He said I needed some rest and that there was no need for me to stay in the waiting hall. At first, I refused to go home. But later I realized that God had it all under His control. It made no difference if we, her relatives, were at the hospital or no. We all went home.

Late that evening, I finally received a call from the hospital. They said my mom was in the intensive care room. The doctor said she had a couple of fractures in her skull, in three places of her brain they had to clean out blood, and in one place the brain was badly damaged. The doctor said that my mom's condition will be clear only in the next 10 days. The doctor's words were: “Her condition is very serious. You've got to pray about it.”

I called one sister in Christ and asked to pray for my mom for the next 10 days. The whole church, my cell group and the Bible school were informed about that, and believers kept praying. To my great joy, my mom's recovery was fast. It was a good sign. No complications, no problems whatsoever. When she uttered several words a couple of days after the operation, the doctor said it was a miracle. My mom was like a child. She had to learn everything step by step: she had to learn to sit up, walk, speak, and count. At first, it was hard for her to recognize us, her children. But her recovery was progressive. Soon she was able to speak and think properly. After reading my mom's diagnosis, the doctors were looking at her like at a miracle. When my mom went to have a routine check-up by herself, the doctors were totally shocked. They had been expecting her to stay home and wait for the doctor there.

There are no impossible things to our Lord. He gave my mom life. He held her life when death seemed to take over. He recovered her health. At present, my mom uses some medication but she does not need any special treatment. She is strong again and wants to work. Whenever she tells her story to someone, she always says: “Only God helped me. I thank Him. Hallelujah.”
